Pop Up Downtown 2016 is fast approaching, bringing the installation of eight original art works into underused spaces throughout Regina’s downtown core! The Regina Downtown Business Improvement District is thrilled to be partnering with the Creative City Centre, for this fourth edition of Pop Up Downtown. Selected artist projects will be unveiled September 17th 2016 – and remain on display until the end of the year. The project is being overseen by RDBID artist in residence, Amber Phelps Bondaroff.
Pop Up Downtown aims to activate public space, enliven downtown and promote fine art in Saskatchewan. Selected artists will create satellite artworks to be installed for a duration of up to three months, in un-used storefronts in the downtown core. Pop Up Downtown works will be included on a map and an audio-based walking tour that will be available to the viewing audience throughout the duration of the installation.
The thematic focus of this year’s Pop Up Downtown is:
Walking – Bodies in Urban Space: The meditative and physiological impacts of the act of walking; the relationship between walking and thinking within an urban space; references to body within the language of architecture and the urban landscape; the subversive potential of bodies in public spaces; the social hierarchies of the urban landscape.
