Position: Research Assistant

Date: June through August, 2017

Hours: 35 hours per week

Wage: $15.00 per hour

 

Position Summary:

The Research Assistant is responsible for assisting with research initiatives that support downtown businesses.  This position will also include general downtown research, administration of the Membership Database and Survey, and providing support for special projects, as requested by the Executive Director.  The Research Assistant is responsible for projecting a professional and positive image of RDBID at all times.  The position of the Research Assistant is a temporary, full-time position.

 

Reporting:

The Research Assistant reports directly to the Executive Director.  In the absence of the Executive Director, the Research Assistant reports to the Manager of Community Partnerships.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Membership Survey

  1. Work with RDBID staff to develop and administer the annual membership survey.
  2. Conduct membership interviews.
  3. Consolidate survey findings.
  4. Develop report on findings.
  5. Gather information for Executive Director as required.

 

Downtown Database

Review and update Downtown Membership database

 

Downtown Research

Conduct research with respect to downtown vitality indicators as requested.

 

 Administration

  1. Assist the Executive Director with special projects and duties as required.
  2. Establish working relationships with City administration and other stakeholders in Downtown Regina.
  3. Attend and participate in all staff meetings.

 

 Preferred Qualifications:

The Research Assistant must possess strong teamwork, problem solving and communication skills and be able to establish effective working relationships with many different people, as well as, determination, loyalty, poise and confidence. The Research Assistant must be able to work independently with minimal supervision while meeting project milestones.  They must be creative and outgoing with the ability to engage both the membership and the general public.  They must also possess the ability to organize and coordinate work efficiently, to set priorities, and to motivate others.  They must have a broad base of office skills coupled with personal flexibility to adapt to changes in organizational structure and move among departments when necessary.  Knowledge of Downtown Regina is essential.  Experience in Microsoft Office is essential.

Position Summary:

The Info on the Go team members are downtown Regina’s ambassadors who provide hospitality help and information, event assistance, clean-up, as well as crime prevention services in the RDBID area.  Info on the Go responsibilities include: responding to inquiries for directions, answering questions on transportation, hotels, dining, shopping, safety protocols, etc. Downtown Ambassadors will also provide directions to and from downtown to local tourist attractions, landmarks, answering questions about current events or other happenings in the area and provide walking tours within the downtown upon request.

Info on the Go Team assists with crime prevention services for the Regina Police Service (RPS) by being watchful for risks or threats to the safety and security of the public, downtown businesses and monitoring public property.  Downtown Ambassadors engage in preventative measures and mediation techniques to address downtown safety concerns with the aim of resolving issues before they require police attention.

Supplemental cleaning duties also fall into the realm of Info on the Go Team. They are expected to assist with maintaining the cleanliness of downtown through small initiatives, such as litter picking and environmental protection for Victoria Park.

The Info on the Go Team facilitates the City Square Program, a summer program involving free programming that activates downtown Regina. This program targets a range of our downtown community members including people with disabilities, newcomers to Canada, Aboriginal people, at-risk youth, visible minorities, homelessness or street-involved youth and adults, children, diverse cultures, and seniors.

They also assist with a number of RDBID’s special events including Doors Open, I Love Regina Day, and more.

Info on the Go Team is seasonal from May to the end of August.

Reporting:

Downtown Ambassadors report directly to the Program Coordinator within the Regina Downtown Business Improvement District (RDBID).   In absence of the Program Coordinator, the Downtown Ambassadors will report to the Manager of Marketing & Communications.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Walk through Downtown Regina and attend mobile kiosk, responding to residents and visitors as needed.
  2. Complete a daily report to document the fulfillment of responsibilities, reporting concerns within the downtown, attending meetings, and reporting on problematic interactions and incidents.
  3. Set-up, count participants, assist partners, and take-down of City Square Programming events and other events where needed.
  4. Offer assistance and a helping hand where possible. This includes holding doors open for downtown patrons and picking up garbage instead of simply walking by.
  5. Assist street homeless and other disadvantaged individuals wherever possible.
  6. Visiting various businesses each day, introducing yourself and getting to know the manager, owner and/or staff. Visits to businesses can be used as an opportunity to inform them of upcoming events or positive changes that are occurring within the downtown. Certain businesses will require multiple daily check-ins. Other businesses will only require daily or weekly check-ins. Ensure that businesses have the Downtown Ambassador cell phone numbers along with the hours of operation for the team. Any concerns that businesses may have or changes within their business (such as closing or moving to a new location) should be reported to the RDBID Program Coordinator.
  7. Conduct ongoing inspections of public areas within the downtown to identify risks or threats to public health and safety, public property and identify external threats or damage to private property. Be observant for dangers or liability concerns within downtown. Note locations where someone could injure themselves (i.e.: slipping or falling) or where there could potentially be a health hazard. Immediately report these risks to the Operations Manager. Some examples include large sidewalk cracks / failures, fallen street signs, graffiti tags, bus shelter damage, etc.
  8. Document all graffiti found within the downtown area.
  9. Pay attention to details and ensure all information is recorded in the notebooks and daily reports. Downtown Ambassadors are expected to share all information with the Regina Police Service (RPS). The police may share information with Downtown Ambassadors, but are not required or expected to do so throughout the term. Any and all information obtained from RPS is considered confidential.
  10. Provide Safe Walks within the downtown area for anyone who requests the service.
  11. Remove and dispose of syringes or other drug paraphernalia found within the downtown area.
  12. Provide support and assistance to the RDBID office staff if directed. Support may consist of assisting at downtown events, conducting deliveries on behalf of RDBID, etc.

Preferred Qualifications:

Potential candidates actively pursuing a post-secondary education and intend to return to that pursuit on a full-time basis in the fall considered an asset. Pursuing a degree in Hospitality, Tourism or Human Justice would be considered an asset. Applicants must possess strong teamwork, problem solving and communication skills and also be able to establish effective working relationships with many different people. Applicants may be expected to lift or move heavy equipment and walk for long periods.
