Regina Farmers’ Market …Buy Local, Eat Fresh!

VeggiesRegina Downtown has been a proud supporter of the Regina Farmers’ Market for almost as many years as we have been an organization. Since 1975, the Market has been the gathering place for a special rural and urban exchange. Local vendors make, bake or grow their products, serving a unique selection of organic and ethnic foods, beautiful flowers and plants, tempting sweets, unique arts and crafts, and much, much more.

The Market began like most farmers' markets in Saskatchewan, with an initial push from the Provincial Ministry of Agriculture in the early 1970s. The Ministry believed that setting up Farmers' Markets across the province would benefit communities, give farmers the opportunity to bring local food to Saskatchewan tables, and offer another source of income for struggling farms. Ralph Gordon Thomson was the first President of the RFM and the driving force behind setting up the first Regina Farmers' Market. The Regina Farmers' Market officially became a non-profit organization 1975 and had their first Market at the Exhibition Grounds with honey and fresh vegetables. In 2010 the Market celebrated 35 years!

Shopping at the Market is a great step towards a healthier, community friendly life. You can trust the quality of locally grown or made goods and feel good about your choices. Meet the producers, ask questions, and get a chance to stroll and chat and meet up with friends! It is a great way to help the environment, along with you, your family, and even your pet!

HeliotropeThe Farmers’ Market also continues to offer its products as not only as a smart economic and community based decision, but as an environmentally sound choice, with emissions being reduced by buying locally rather than shipping products across North America.

Regina Downtown is grateful for the overwhelmingly positive impact the Farmers’ Market has on our Downtown neighbourhood. It’s activities like the Regina Farmers’ Market that really showcase our Downtown community! In the past Regina Downtown has helped with promotion, volunteer resources, pedestrian counts, street closure, capital investment (new table cloths and partnership on canvas bags), and assisting the RFM in securing office space close to the Market site.

You can find locally grown and produced food and specialty products Downtown at the Regina Farmers’ Market from early May and to early October.

The Regina Farmers’ Market has plans to locate back to their roots on Scarth Street once the festival plaza project on 12th Avenue is completed. For now, you can visit them at our civic meeting space – the City Hall Plaza.
